It may not have been her best day, but Alyx Treasure jumped today with the top fourteen girls her age in the High Jump at the World Youth Championships in Italy. Along with 3 other girls she placed 11th., in the finals today. Although she did not meet her seasons best of1.78 or her preliminary mark of 1.77, she did make that all important final, and be able to have the fortune of being in such great company. For at least 6 of the girls in the competition a little bit of good fortune could have swung the numbers either way. When you have half a dozen competing at exactly the same level, it shows the girls they all belonged. Alyx will return to BC next week, and prepare for her final competition of the year at the Legion Nationals in Sherbrook Quebec. She hold both the Legion and National records in High Jump at both age 15 and the Youth Legion and National records for 16/17. Congratulations Alyx, you have done us PROUD! |

At the WORLD YOUTH TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS in Bressonone Italy (Sudtriol) currently underway, local high jumper Alyx Treasure today qualified for the final round of jumping to be held on Friday. She along with 13 others were chosen to go into the final round, based on a jump of 1.77. Normally twelve are advanced to the final, but it appears that the officials cut preliminary jumping off at that height and placed 14 to go forward. Alyx began jumping at 1.65 meters clearing the bar on her first attempt. She then missed once at 1.70 then cleared, repeated that at 1.74 and then missed twice at 1.77 before making it. The officials started a 1.80 meters then cut of jumping in both A and B group and advancing the 1.77 jumpers into the final round. To view the score sheet on line, go to iaaf world youth championships, then to results, and scroll to the w high jump. This will show the score sheet from today, then on Friday go back to that web site and go to live feed you can watch the score sheet as things happen. Remember, the time posted on the iaaf site is Italy time, and we are 9 hours behind them. |

Following her participation in the Jack Brow Memorial Meet in Kelowna on the weekend, Alyx Treasure age 17 went to the Lower Mainland for several days to prepare for the World Youth Championships In Sudtriol Italy, July 8th to 12th. She along with 7 other BC athletes left Vancouver Thursday morning and a overnight stay in Toronto where they joined 30 other Canada wide 16 and 17 year old Track Stars. This morning the team along with supporting staff left Toronto for Sudtriol Italy where they will take part in the World Championships. There will be 1300 athletes representing 180 countries at the major Youth Athletics event Follow the results by googling iaaf world youth athletic championships or by going to Athletics Canada, then calendar of events bring up International events, then world youth championships. Alyx will begin competition on July 8th in the preliminary round of the Youth Female High Jump. Should she qualify in that round she will move on the the final jump of later in that week. While she has not reached her personal best of 1.82 meters, she has been bordering on it, and is only 4 centimeters off. Alyx has not yet had tough competition in 2009, but will have no worries in Italy. She performs much better under pressure, and we are hoping she can achieve her maximum height in Italy, and if she does so, she could make the medal Podium. Alyx is only the second PG Track member to make it to the World Youth Competition. Geoff Martinson, son of our Coach Brian Martinson did so in 2003 when they were held in Sherbrook Quebec. WE ARE THINKING OF YOU ALYX AND WISH YOU THE BEST OF LUCK!!! |

JACK BROW MEMORIAL MEET A SUCCESS |

For the 25th straight year athletes from our Club were in Kelowna June 27/28th., to take in the Jack Brow Memorial Track and Field Meet. The meet was first held in 1984 with prompting from our organization to get something going in the Okanagan, and they lived up to the challenge and have one of Western Canada's best events each year. Unlike the early years of the meet when over eighty of our club members would attend, only 33 athletes made the trek. This was the second smallest group to take part in the event, but they represented us very well. In total they brought home 47 medals (including one for each relay placing), consisting of eight gold, ninteen silver and 20 bronze. Our biggest medal collectors were 9 year old Anika Schroeter with 1 gold 3 silver and 1 bronze while 11 year old Keiran Leboe captured 4 gold and 1 bronze. Some other medalists were 9 year old Sean Williams with 2 silver and a bronze; 10 year old Dawson Williams with a silver and a bronze; 11 year old Tyrel Laing with a silver and bronze; Cameron Cain with 2 bronze; Sean Gaiesky 14 had 1 gold and 2 silver, and Sarah Frost age 13 with a matching set of one each gold silver and bronze. Great stuff by our kids and another great job by Kelowna Track and Field Club. CONGRATULATIONS EVERYONE! |
